Compare writing tones with AI.
Write the same brief in three tones of voice and choose the one that suits your readers
Find the voice that suits your readers by writing one brief in three tones. You give the AI the same request three times, with Professional, Educational and Approachable as the tone. Then you compare the three versions side by side and keep the one your audience will respond to. A prospective student reads differently from a parent or a partner organisation.
The video writes one paragraph for an Open Day page in three tones.
Before you start
- AI is switched on, with Enable page creation assistant ticked. See Turn on AI in DXPR Builder.
- The page is open for editing in DXPR Builder, so the builder toolbar shows.
- You have a short brief: who reads the text and what it must say. Each version uses DXPR credits.
Set up
- Click More on the builder toolbar and choose AI settings. The AI Settings dialog opens.
- Choose Professional under Tone of Voice and click Save.
- Click AI Agent on the builder toolbar and type your brief. Say where the text goes, such as "at the end", for example "Write a short paragraph at the end that explains what Open Day visitors can do".
- Click Generate content.
- Repeat steps 1 to 4 with Educational and then Approachable, with the same brief.
- Compare the 3 paragraphs and pick the one that suits your readers. You delete the other 2 after the comparison, see below.
- Click Save on the builder toolbar.

What you see
Each request adds a new paragraph at the end of the page, written in the tone you chose. The line at the top of the AI Agent panel shows the current tone, for example "Tone: Educational". The tone stays chosen in this browser until you change it, also for the text toolbar's AI commands.
Compare the versions with one reader in mind. Professional is clear and businesslike. Educational explains. Approachable sounds like a friendly conversation.
Keep the version that fits. Point at each of the others to show its control bar, then choose More > Delete. The video keeps all 3 on the page to compare them. Check every fact in the version you keep, see Review and keep AI text.
Your site sets the list of tones. It also has Formal, Inspirational and Persuasive. Your site administrator can add more, see AI configuration.
If you don't see a different tone
- The three versions sound the same. The brief left little room for tone, or Save was not clicked in AI Settings. Check the tone in the panel's status line before you click Generate content.
- The page turns grey and stops responding after you save a tone. The gear in the AI Agent panel can leave the dialog's grey overlay behind after a generation. Press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac) to save the page, then reload it. To avoid the overlay, change the tone with More > AI settings on the builder toolbar, as in step 1.
- There is no Tone of Voice list in AI Settings. Your site has no tones. Ask your site administrator to add terms to the AI Tone of Voice vocabulary.
- The new paragraph replaced your text instead of adding to it. The brief sounded like a rewrite. Press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac) and say where the new text goes, for example "at the end".
- The status line turns into "Hmm...something seems to have gone wrong." DXPR could not finish the request, for example because the account is out of credits. Click Retry, or check Credits remaining at
/admin/dxpr_studio/dxpr_builder/ai_settings.
